Description: “Rakin” born May 8, 2012, is a beautiful bay 16.2 hand gelding standardbred. This 12-year-old is quite a handsome boy! He came to us in November 2022 after a career as a racehorse where he won $54,720 in his 152 races. He left his racing career at Monticello Raceway with 11 first place wins, 11 second place races, and 17 races at third place. Rakin last raced as a pacer in August 2022 and comes from a great line of horses. His sire was Bettors Delight and dam was Blogette Hanover. His previous owner loves him very much and made the choice to place Rakin with Sunshine Horses, in order to find him a permanent adoptive home where he can thrive and live out his retirement with a loving person or family to care for him.
As a standardbred he was harness raced and was not ridden. We are currently working with him weekly to improve his ground manners and teach him to do well under saddle. When Rakin first arrived, recently off the track, he was full of energy and needed some time to settle into his new relaxed life at our farm. He is improving weekly and is such a wonderful, sweet boy. He stands on cross ties for grooming, is easy to tack up with his saddle and bridle, happily gives his feet to be cleaned, and loves to have his face gently brushed.
When walking on a lead and under saddle, he is very alert to new things around him- birds, tractors, and noises give him a little start initially but he is learning that they won’t hurt him. He has been ridden only a few times so far and only at a walk but is very quickly progressing and should soon be working at a faster gait: trot or pace. Rakin is very good with listening to hand cues with reins and is learning to react to leg cues. He walks, stops, backs up, and turns well under saddle. He has not been asked for a trot or pace yet as he is still getting to know his schooler and he needs to take his time to get comfortable with a rider.
Rakin is going to make someone an amazing horse friend! He has so much potential. We at Sunshine are just getting started in working with him on a regular basis. He has come so far in the short time that he has been at Sunshine Horses!
